Campaigns: End the Death Penalty
Troy Davis faces execution despite a strong claim of innocence.Urge Governor Perdue to commute his sentence.
Troy Davis faces execution for the murder of Police Officer Mark MacPhail in Georgia, despite a strong claim of innocence. 7 out of 9 witnesses have recanted or contradicted their testimony, no murder weapon was found and no physical evidence links Davis to the crime. The Georgia Board of Pardon and Paroles has voted to deny clemency, yet Governor Perdue still has the power to step in and commute Davis’ sentence.
Troy Davis received a third execution date of October 27, 2008 after the US Supreme Court denied his petition to have his case reheard. On October 24, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals issued a stay of execution to consider Davis’s request to petition again. On the 16th of April, this appeal was unfortunately denied. Troy now has 30 days to present his case to the Supreme Court. In the meantime we need to keep the pressure on by writing to Governer Sonny Perdue.
Please do not contact the board directly, as doing so could be detrimental to Troy's case. Instead, we urge you to contact Georgia Governor Sonny Perdue and ask that he commute Troy Davis' sentence.
