Is it a co-incidence that in November of the same year, Berliners were confident about climbing their wall and defying the East German border guards? And gradually the iron curtain fell? I don't think so. When people under oppression realise that when as one they can ahieve freedom (sadly, even with some sacrifices), it changes everything.
