Campaign latest:
10 years on and Guantánamo is still open. Sign our new petition and remind President Obama we've not forgotten.
The War on Terror - here, in the US, or anywhere else - doesn't excuse states from respecting human rights.
Terrorism is not a new phenomenon but the 'war on terror' is.
While Amnesty acknowledges the right of governments to protect their citizens when they face complex challenges and threats, these measures should never result in the compromise of human rights.
President Obama ordered the suspension of military trials and the closure of Guantánamo Bay, but has failed to carry out either. Here in the UK, an enquiry into the UK's role in rendition and torture must be strengthened to make a difference.
Our campaigning is working but there's still more to be done - take action today, just look at the box to the right for what you can do right now.
Security with Human Rights
Torture is the most despicable act and should be stopped.

Torture is the most despicable act and should be stopped.
I believe that Guantanmo Bay is a disfunctional way to treat people and it should be closed immediately. It is a sanction which should never of been opened in the first place. The people who are currently being detained and have been detained there are only SUSPECTED terrorists nothing has been proven.
However I believe that everyone should still have certain human rights including the right for freedom from torture and inhuman or degrading treatment. It is pure cruelty and should be shut!!
I have just emailed my own MP to ask for an immediate independant enquiry into the UK international involvement of torture and also rendition flights.
I believe that we all have the right to freedom, we are born free, it is our inherent right. Who are we to take away someone else's freedom through such a horrific act as torture? Torture does not work anyway, it is an unreliable source of information!
I've not seen much reporting in the MSM of what I think is one of the most threatening decisions in U.S. and world history. It has implications for the U.K. extradition treaty with the U.S. and indeed for citizens across the globe.
Last week (Dec 2009) the U.S. Supreme Court effectively endorsed the use of torture by refusing to hear an appeal from a DC Circuit Court that Guantanamo detainees do not qualify as "persons": "torture is a foreseeable consequence of the military’s detention of suspected enemy combatants." In essence it avoided the constitutional issue enshrined in the U.S. Religious Freedom Restoration Act by declaring that a "suspected enemy combatant" is no longer a 'person'.
In other words anyone who is suspected can be automatically stripped of all human rights - whoever or wherever they are.
The rest of the world was of course watching President Obama collect a Peace Prize in Copenhagen.
Thanks to all grup Pth!
Thanks Rosa! Let us know if you hear anything back.
Just emailed my MP to ask for an independent inquiry into torture
Great to hear that judges have now granted Obama's request to suspend all military trials of Guantanamo detainees.
