Another winner was a supporter in London who raised over £2000 with an Amnestea event!

Lily in London had an event with a 'Seven Deadly Sins' theme. "Everyone was assigned a sin which they had to dress up as (we had pajamas for sloth, giant human cupcakes for gluttony and the hulk for wrath, to name a few!) and each room of the house was decorated as one sin", she told us.

So think outside the box for your AmnesTEAs - and it could be an event to remember for years to come!

Love it or loathe it, Valentine's Day will soon be upon us. Whether people are interested in Amnesty or not, they are certainly interested in each other, so why not capitalise on all those warm and fuzzy feeling by organising a Valentine's Dance - or how about a Speed Dating event?

Make it a sponsored event or charge for tickets; sell the lovers cupcakes or flowers... Could this be the start of something beautiful?

Does anyone else have any good ideas for Valentine's fundraisers?

*Try and link the campaign to the event - dress code could be relevant ie red. yellow and black clothes for a 'Shell Hell' event

*Refreshments as an add-on to any event - people always want a snack, whether your event is a club night, comedy event or just letter-writing.

*Social events - everyone can get something out of these.

*using the contacts and skills of the group - play to your strengths. If someone is a dab hand with a paintbrush, have them make a banner. If they can crunch the numbers, put them in charge of the accounts!

*Keep it convenient - have a location handy for everyone, and time the event so that people can come straight from work, school, or lectures.

Watch out for where your yarn is made though, quite a lot of the cheaper stuff is from countries with a poor human rights record. Using British made or even rare breeds yarn will be more expensive but you can charge more.

In 1999 I organised an AI event at a church which had been converted into a community centre of sorts and got the use of it for free, insurance included. It was during the USA campaign so I contacted a local gospel choir to help celebrate Martin Luther King Day which cost us £50 to cover their expenses (but they got some bookings out of it). Expect to pay something towards their travel, even if local, and budget for this. We provided tea and biscuits. I persuaded local shops to pay for the leaflets by including their ads and donating the photocopies. I delivered around 1000 myself (phew!) and this took time. I also managed to get interviewed ahead of it on a Christian radio station because I emailed them with the details (I don't regard myself as a Christian but it didn't get in the way!). Be warned - I almost caved in under the stress of co-ordinating everything, especially as I found that I could not rely on those to whom I had delegated tasks. Your helpers have to be honest about how much they can do and you all have to be as professional as possible about it. They cannot decide two hours before the event that they don't feel like it. You will probably find that the same people help out every time. In the same year I also approached a comedy promoter to see if he would do something for AI and the result was an opening event at a new venue, proceeds to AI, with Al Murray and Stewart Lee (my finest hour). That's right party animal. Local companies can be very willing to donate products for you to sell. I hear a local waffle company provided themed waffles for a group of students during their raise-off. How tasty is that? Something like this could really add to your event.

From past events, I think you will definitely find local bands and DJ's who are more than happy to help out. If you explain to a venue the reason for your party they may also be sympathetic and charge you a reduced fee. You never know til you ask, you may be surprised with what you can get for free!

A bit more expensive but the message lasts as long the the tshirt.

And while you're at it, launch the raise-off by throwing a party in Protect the Human Week (running from the 17th-23rd of October)! Hopefully you'll have recruited new members in freshers week (new members= new ideas!)
