Fundraising ideas

fundraising for young people

Hi all,

I was wondering how best young people can go about fundraising (in schools and universities specifically) as my uni doesn't really have much going on. Any tips appreciated x

  • Great, this is exacxtly what i needed help with as well,
but does anyone have any quick ideas that could function in a week?
    I know it s a bit late, but........hmmm....

  • Thanks Aspidistra! Friendship bracelets with the Amnesty candle would be amazing! Top marks to anyone who can make some of them..

  • I've just remembered "friendship bracelets", I've never made them myself but there are a number of sites showing how to make them, how about AI ones with the symbol on them? The other potential fundraiser is a hat sale, especially at this time of year because if you start making them now they'll be available when the weather is cooler. Crocheted beanie hats are OK for males and females and they can be made quite quickly from one ball of yarn. Watch out for where your yarn is made though, quite a lot of the cheaper stuff is from countries with a poor human rights record. Using British made or even rare breeds yarn will be more expensive but you can charge more.

  • I must say, students and youth groups often have the most creative ideas, and don't let lack of funds stop them. University groups can often count on the help and support of union shops, bars and venues to organise music/comedy/dj nights whilst schools seem to do well with non uniform days, cake sales, raffles and stalls.

  • Great idea Aspidistra :) No one can resist home made cookies, or even cupcakes which you can decorate any way you like to make them stand out (how about using green pink and yellow the Amnesty colours?). T shirts would be great to get people talking about what you're doing and who you're fundraising for.

  • How about making and selling cupcakes or large cookies? They wouldn't cost too much to make and as they are small most people would be able to afford one. That's the trouble with fundraising around students - they can't afford to donate much! You might have to get some advice on health and safety/hygiene so how about asking the catering staff to get involved? The best time to do it is during the lunch break when everyone is in the mood to eat anyway. Get the art department involved in designing and screenprinting tshirts or customise some for the event. A bit more expensive but the message lasts as long the the tshirt.

  • How about encouraging your uni group to join the raise-off 2010? the annual inter-university fundraising competition is great fun. Visit www.amnesty.org.uk/raiseoff for details. And while you're at it, launch the raise-off by throwing a party in Protect the Human Week (running from the 17th-23rd of October)! Hopefully you'll have recruited new members in freshers week (new members= new ideas!)
Let us know how you get on..
