Death penalty threat hangs over Ex Beijing vice mayor

A former vice-mayor of the Chinese capital, Beijing, has received a suspended death sentence for corruption, state media have said.

Liu Zhihua was convicted by a court in Hebei province of taking $1,020,000 (£589,000) in bribes while in charge of building venues for the Olympic Games.

We, the undersigned, were deeply concerned to hear of the U.S. Supreme Court's denial of a writ of certiorari for Troy Anthony Davis, a Georgia death row inmate, a quite probably innocent man facing an execution scheduled for October 27, 2008, and respectively urge you to reverse your prior (Sept. 22) judgement, and grant Mr. Davis a new trial.

1. Write/fax/email to David E. Nahmias, Attorney General for the Northern District of Georgia
2. Ask for a White House presidential pardon and ask they look into the case and demand that the Parole Board reconsider clemency.
3. Phone/fax/email directly to the Georgia Parole Board, demanding that they reconsider clemency, based on the recantations by seven of the nine non-police witnesses.

The Maryland State Police classified 53 nonviolent activists as terrorists and entered their names and personal information into state and federal databases that track terrorism suspects, the state police chief acknowledged yesterday.

Police Superintendent Terrence B. Sheridan revealed at a legislative hearing that the surveillance operation, which targeted opponents of the death penalty and the Iraq war, was far more extensive than was known when its existence was disclosed in July.

JACKSON, Georgia (CNN) -- The U.S. Supreme Court granted a last-minute reprieve to a Georgia man convicted fewer than two hours before he was to be executed for the 1989 slaying of an off-duty police officer.
Martina Correia, Davis' sister, says she is hoping the U.S. Supreme Court intervenes in the case.

Troy Anthony Davis first learned that his execution had been stayed when he saw it on the news, he told CNN in an exclusive phone interview minutes after the stay was announced.

Davis has long said he didn't kill a Savannah, Georgia, police officer, and the U.S. Supreme Court was the last option for Davis to have his execution postponed. It was scheduled to move forward at 7 p.m. ET.

Two anti-death penalty activists, Rev. Marvin Morgan, First Congregational Church, and Steve Woodhall, were arrested today at the Governor’s Office, after refusing to leave the office until speaking with the governor about tomorrow’s impending execution of Troy Davis.

Woodhall has been fasting since Thursday for Davis, only drinking water, as part of a one-man vigil outside of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution newspaper offices downtown. Meanwhile, Rev. Morgan today issued a letter to the governor asking to let him take the place of Davis.

Davis’ last hope to avoid his 7 p.m. Tuesday execution now appears to rest with the U.S. Supreme Court, where his lawyers have also asked for a stay of execution.

Davis, 39, sits on death row for the Aug. 19, 1989, murder of Officer Mark Allen MacPhail. But since Davis’ 1991 trial, seven key prosecution witnesses have recanted their testimony.

His claims of innocence has drawn international attention, with Pope Benedict XVI and former President Jimmy Carter asking for Davis’ death sentence to be commuted to life in prison without parole.

Tehran is party to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights and the Convention on the Rights of the Child, which are international treaties outlawing the execution of those under 18 at the time of their crime. Iran has, however, attempted to circumvent its obligations by keeping minors on death row until they reach 18 and then executing them afterwards.

Behnam Zarei, a 19-year-old Iranian, was hanged in the south-western city of Shiraz on Tuesday after he had spent more than three years on death row

Zarei, who was 15 at the time of his crime, had told the court the killing had been an accident. He was hanged “without the knowledge of his lawyer and family”,

Last year, the canton's executive branch and the Protestant church council refused even to consider exoneration, but the Glarus parliament urged the executive branch to reconsider. In June, the Glarus executive branch asked parliament to ratify the exoneration.

Human rights organisations have condemned the execution of another juvenile offender in Iran on Tuesday.

Behnam Zare was the second Iranian in a week to be put to death for a crime he committed when he was under 18 and the sixth such execution in 2008.

The continuing violation of human rights around the world means there is an increasing need for individuals to know their own rights and understand issues that affect them directly.
