In 1996, I was sitting with 20,000 grieving women in a stadium in Tuzla, Bosnia. The women were holding photographs of husbands, fathers, brothers, sons and boyfriends who had been disappeared a year earlier in a place called Srebrenica, a UN enclave where Bosnian refugees had turned over their protection to UN peacekeepers who stood passively by as 10,000 men were marched off to be slaughtered.

This morning I received a text message from a friend who was on her way to work. It read: "Am just in the tube and there's a really offensive poster up there but it says its Amnesty – do you know anything about it? It says 'Rape is cheaper than bullets'."

The Democratic Republic of Congo is struggling to recover from a lengthy civil war in which an estimated three million people have died, mostly through starvation and disease.

Since the country gained independence in 1960, its vast mineral wealth has been a key factor in the country's civil wars and instability.

It has huge reserves of gold, cobalt, tantalite and cassiterite all used in the manufacture of consumer electronics.

Rwandan leader visits jailed aide

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has visited a top aide detained in Germany in connection with a killing that triggered the 1994 genocide.

Rose Kabuye's arrest was a violation of Rwandan sovereignty, he said, and would harm international ties.

Ms Kabuye was detained in Frankfurt on Sunday under a warrant issued by a French judge.

The corpses of the dead were still rotting on the streets of Bukavu, a ramshackle port in the country's east. The living had barricaded themselves inside their homes as marauding rebels tore through the city, raping nuns and pillaging shops.

Above the town, in the gardens of a shabby but elegant colonial-era villa built overlooking lovely Lake Kivu, the architect of the chaos sat snoozing in a deck chair.

It was June 2004, and I had come up to the villa - now officially the home of the governor of South Kivu province - in the hope of interviewing Laurent Nkunda, the renegade brigadier whose men had inflicted days of misery on Bukavu.

British troops may join aid convoys in Congo refugee chaos

United Nations peacekeepers made their first attempt to reach hundreds of thousands of refugees trapped behind rebel lines yesterday as Britain pressed on with its diplomatic efforts to bring peace to eastern Congo.

The head of the peacekeeping mission in the region gave a warning that his forces were dangerously overstretched on four fronts and begged for urgent reinforcements.
