Libya’s National Transitional Council has pledged to investigate human rights abuses committed by its own supporters, in response to a newly released report by Amnesty International.

In a statement on 13 September, the NTC condemned all abuses committed during the war, and said it “will move quickly to act on Amnesty’s findings to make sure similar abuses are avoided in areas of continued conflict such as Bani Walid and Sirte.”

The UN Security Council is meeting to consider action against Colonel Muammar Gaddafi's government in Libya over its attempts to put down an uprising.

A draft resolution calls for an arms embargo, travel ban and asset freeze.

It also proposes referring Col Gaddafi to the International Criminal Court for alleged crimes against humanity.

Huge numbers of Britons would support an anti-immigration English nationalist party if it was not associated with violence and fascist imagery, according to the largest survey into identity and extremism conducted in the UK.

A Populus poll found that 48% of the population would consider supporting a new anti-immigration party committed to challenging Islamist extremism, and would support policies to make it statutory for all public buildings to fly the flag of St George or the union flag....

UN calls for war crimes investigation in Burma

A senior UN official has called for Burma's military rulers to be investigated over allegations of crimes against humanity and war crimes perpetrated against Burmese civilians, in a move that will sharply increase pressure on the isolated regime ahead of controversial national elections due later this year.
In a draft report to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, Tomás Ojea Quintana, special rapporteur on human rights in Burma, described "a pattern of gross and systematic violation of human rights" <snip>
"There is an indication that those human rights violations are the result of a state policy that involves authorities in the executive, military and judiciary at all levels," he said.

China wants to crack down on press freedom and introduce a new training system that requires journalists to train in Marxist and communist theories of news.

Li Dongdong, deputy director of the General Administration of Press and
Publication, told the South China Morning Post that some mainland reporters were giving Chinese journalism a bad name because they were not properly trained.

Under communist theories of journalism, media should support the leadership rather than operate as a watchdog.

Burma law formally bars Aung San Suu Kyi from election

Burma has issued a law which will bar pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi from taking part in planned elections and could force her party to expel her.
The new law prohibits anyone with a criminal conviction from belonging to a political party.
Ms Suu Kyi has been detained on various charges for most of the past 20 years, after winning the last polls in 1990.
She was already excluded from political office by a constitutional bar on people with foreign spouses.

Burma's military government announced on Monday that the long awaited laws had been passed - a crucial step.
No date for the poll has been set, but the ruling generals have promised that it will be sometime this year.

The Burmese opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi failed in her latest bid to end more than a decade of house arrest today after the country's highest court threw out an appeal against her sentence.
The supreme court's decision was widely expected but her lawyer said he would launch a final special appeal to the supreme court after establishing the reasons why the latest attempt had been rejected. "The court order did not mention any reasons," he said.
The British ambassador Andrew Heyn attended the court session along with diplomats from Australia, France and the US.
"Although the decision comes as no surprise, it is deeply disappointing," he said.

Assassinations have been an inseparable part of the Israeli-Arab conflict since pre-state days. Israel's security doctrine views the targeting of enemy operatives as an effective tactic. It's pointed, not too risky, and undermines the enemy's confidence. Critics cite the moral problem of extrajudicial killings, and warn that the successor might prove even worse – as happened after Israel killed Hezbollah leader Abbas Musawi in 1992, and got the more sophisticated Hassan Nasrallah in his place, in addition to the retaliatory bombing of the Israeli embassy in Argentina.
But despite the debate, Israel has never ceased to employ its assassination teams.

Burma's ruling junta has released the deputy leader of the country's pro-democracy party from nearly seven years in detention, but offered no indication that he or still-detained party leader Aung San Suu Kyi would be allowed to take part in this year's elections.
The release yesterday of 82-year-old Tin Oo, who helped found the National League for Democracy with Aung San Suu Kyi, comes shortly before a UN envoy visits Burma to evaluate the regime's progress on human rights.
