Pakistan Rape Victim Faces New Injustice

Every day, Mukhtar Mai faces the trauma of what happened to her. Nine years ago, to punish her for an affair her brother was accused of having, a tribal council ordered that she be repeatedly raped. After the attack, she says she was paraded past scores of villagers. It became the most infamous women's rights case in Pakistan for years. Six suspected rapists were caught, convicted and imprisoned. Pakistan's Supreme Court has decided that all but one of the men previously imprisoned for gang-raping Mukhtar Mai on the orders of tribal elders should have their convictions overturned.

They have now been released.

Today Indian Minister of Environment and Forests, Jairam Ramesh announced that he has rejected Vedanta's proposed bauxite mine in the Niyamgiri Mountain, Orissa, India. In addition, the clearance process for the expansion of the Lanjigarh refinery has been suspended. This represents a victory not only for the Dongria Kondh, but for indigenous and tribal people throughout the world.

In a devastating report, a committee set up by India’s Environment Minister has ruled that Vedanta has acted illegally and with ‘total contempt for the law’; that local officials have ‘colluded’ in the company’s illegal activity and falsified documents; that ‘it is established beyond any doubt that the [mining] area is the cultural, religious and economic habitat of the Dongria Kondh ’; and that to allow Vedanta’s mine would be ‘illegal’.

Two leaders of an Indian tribe’s resistance to a controversial mine have been abducted and are now missing, according to local reports.

Lodu (Lado) Sikaka and Sena Sikaka, two Dongria Kondh men from Odisha, eastern India, have been leading their tribe’s peaceful struggle against a massive bauxite mine planned for their land by British company Vedanta Resources.

Mining giant Vedanta’s proposed bauxite mine in Orissa's Niyamgiri Hills has sparked protests in India and abroad. The environmental ministry, reacting to reports that the mining will impact the livelihood and traditions of the tribals who live in the vicinity of the mine has withheld a final clearance to the mine.

In February this year, The Church of England decided to sell its entire stake in Vedanta, a FTSE listed company. But in an exclusive interview with NDTV’s Srinivasan Jain, the CEO of Vedanta Resources, Anil Agarwal, says he is going ahead with the project despite mounting unrest.

The Guardian revealed in 2009 that Vedanta plans on sending the ore to Bharat Aluminium Company Ltd. (BALCO). A Vedanta subsidiary, BALCO supplies 90% of the aluminium used in India’s nuclear-capable Agni, Prithvi and Akaash missiles.
