I see people on public buses, and I see their eyes, and I see they hold no hope. They can’t even imagine that they’ll be able to buy a house. They come from very poor villages where they’ve never seen electricity or toilet paper.

Inspired by events in the Middle East and North Africa, 19-year-old Jabbar Savalan used facebook to call for protests against the Azerbaijan government.

The next day he was arrested, and later convicted on fabricated drugs charges. He is now serving two and a half years in prison.

Every day, Mukhtar Mai faces the trauma of what happened to her. Nine years ago, to punish her for an affair her brother was accused of having, a tribal council ordered that she be repeatedly raped. After the attack, she says she was paraded past scores of villagers. It became the most infamous women's rights case in Pakistan for years. Six suspected rapists were caught, convicted and imprisoned. Pakistan's Supreme Court has decided that all but one of the men previously imprisoned for gang-raping Mukhtar Mai on the orders of tribal elders should have their convictions overturned.

They have now been released.

In 1992 whilst travelling the world in his 20s Billy Burton found himself in dire financial difficulty and made a terrible decision to carry 5kg of cannabis out of the Philippines. The campaign to secure Billy’s freedom does not condone what he did. It is about humanity, compassion and recognition of punishment served. Billy was given 40 years, he has now served 18 years with 22 years to go. There is now a new president in the Philippines and he has instigated a review into fairness within the justice system. We are asking everyone to write letters to 4 key contacts in the UK and in the Philippines, we have a website with contacts, addresses and downloadable letter templates.

It is my observation that the world is suffering from not living to its highest potential.

We still have racism sexism homophobia and all other forms of ignorance. That ignorance unfortunately permeates nearly every culture in the so-called “developed” countries.

Until we understand how this ignorance comes about then it is possible that we will not able to make a different choice about it.

I think I have one possible explanation of how this ignorance comes about and stays in our culture. It’s not the one and only right explanation, but it is something that I have thought about and I would like to offer it forward for you to think about.

People have lived in the settlement of Kikaramoja in Jinja, Uganda, since the 1950s. Waiswa Magoola, age 47, has always lived here. His father bought land in 1953, and even after Ugandan independence in 1962, when the land was given to the Jinja town council, he continued to pay fees for the land.

Missing Chinese dissident lawyer Gao Zhisheng 'alive'

Prominent Chinese human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, missing for more than a year after being detained by police, has spoken to Western journalists.
He said he was living near Wutai mountain, a Buddhist landmark in northern Shanxi province.
"I want to live a quiet life for a while," Mr Gao said by telephone.
He told Reuters news agency he had been released six months ago. He was abducted by police from a relative's house in February 2009.
Reuters said it had taken steps to verify Mr Gao's identity.
Another human rights lawyer said he had also spoken to Mr Gao on Sunday.

It took on the might of the Ku Klux Klan, and was duly rewarded by having its offices razed and its senior lawyers targeted for assassination. But it kept on going and grew to be one of the most respected monitoring groups of rightwing extremism in America today.
Recently it brought out a report called Terror From the Right, which identifies, in chronological order, the serious home-grown plots, conspiracies and racist rampages that have been cooked up in America since the Oklahoma City bomb in 1995...<snip>....... one name crops up time and time again: Barack Obama.

Burma's ruling junta has released the deputy leader of the country's pro-democracy party from nearly seven years in detention, but offered no indication that he or still-detained party leader Aung San Suu Kyi would be allowed to take part in this year's elections.
The release yesterday of 82-year-old Tin Oo, who helped found the National League for Democracy with Aung San Suu Kyi, comes shortly before a UN envoy visits Burma to evaluate the regime's progress on human rights.

More than 100 Roma people – including families with children – are living in metal cabins next to a sewage works in Romania after they were forcibly evicted from their homes, according to a new Amnesty report launching today.

The report, Treated like waste: Roma homes destroyed and health at risk in Romania, tells how the Roma people were forcibly evicted by municipal authorities from a building in the centre of Miercurea Ciuc – the capital city of Harghita County in central Romania. Most were resettled by the authorities in metal cabins on the outskirts of the town, behind a sewage plant

He would say, 'you ever listen to Eminem or Dr Dre' and... I thought how could it be somebody is here who's doing the same stuff that I do when I'm back home
Mr Neely was one of his guards.

HANOI, Vietnam — Followers of a world-famous Buddhist teacher say police and an angry mob have forced them out of a monastery in central Vietnam, ending a religious experiment in the communist country that turned into a monthslong standoff with authorities.

Followers of Thich Nhat Hanh, an Vietnam-born monk who has popularized Buddhism in the West, said about 150 monks were forced from the Bat Nha monastery in Lam Dong province Sunday, and about 230 nuns left on their own Monday morning.

Outrage at Jammeh's death threat

An online petition has been launched in protest at the Gambian president's threat to kill human rights workers.
President Yahya Jammeh told state TV earlier this week he would kill anybody who wanted to "destabilise" The Gambia.
"If you are affiliated with any human rights group, be rest assure that your security is not guaranteed... we are ready to kill saboteurs," he said.
The campaign by a coalition of pressure groups wants the African Union's human rights commission HQ moved from Gambia.
