New video footage of a public hanging in Iran this week highlights the brutalisation of both the condemned and those who watch executions, Amnesty International said today.

The video provided to Amnesty was shot on 19 July, and shows the execution by hanging of three men in Azadi Square in the city of Kermanshah.

Iran: Mehdi Karroubi 'house arrest' after protest call

Iranian opposition leader Mehdi Karroubi has been put under house arrest, his official website says. He and Mir Hossein Mousavi, another opposition leader, had called for a rally on Monday to support the popular uprisings in Egypt and Tunisia. The authorities refused permission, calling it a political move.

Iranian teenager faces execution for 'false' gay assault charges

An 18-year-old Iranian man is facing execution over a false sodomy charge, campaigners say.

Ebrahim Hamidi was sentenced to death two years ago at the age of 16 for an unspecified assault on another man.

Although the allegation was withdrawn and the Iranian Supreme Court has rejected the guilty verdict and execution order, a lower provincial court is insisting on Mr Hamidi's execution.

Iran's Islamic leadership has in recent weeks launched a scaremongering campaign to persuade the population that vice is sweeping the streets of the capital. National law stipulates that women wear headscarves and shape shrouding cloaks but many women, particularly in the capital, spend heavily on fashions that barely adhere to the regulations.

The wife of one of Iran's opposition leaders today accused the nation's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, of allowing violence and abuses to crush opposition supporters, including the alleged beating of her son during last week's protests.
Fatemeh Karroubi claimed her son Ali was savagely attacked inside a mosque by hardline militiamen amid a large-scale security crackdown on Thursday during events marking the 31st anniversary of the Islamic revolution.
"They beat him up and insulted him along with other people arrested. This happened in a house of God,"

Tehran University students have been filing into their classes past giant posters of Ayatollah Khomeini and the stern slogans of the Islamic revolution for the last 30 years. But the angry scenes on the university's sprawling campus this week seemed like a throwback to another age.
"Marg bar diktatur" (Death to dictatorship), they chanted in their thousands, waving green banners and posters behind high canvas screens tied to the railings as basij miltiamen and revolutionary guards prowled the streets outside.
Some held up Iranian flags with the symbol of the Islamic republic cut out of the middle.

Iranian men don hijabs in protest at student's arrest

Iranian opposition supporters have launched an online campaign to free a student activist accused of dressing as a woman to try to avoid arrest.
Hundreds of men have posted photos of themselves wearing Islamic headscarves as part of the "Be a man" campaign to show solidarity with Majid Tavakoli.
He was arrested during protests in Tehran on Monday and state media showed images of him in headscarf and robes.
The opposition say the pictures were staged in a bid to discredit him.

3 Iranian men on death row for 'homosexual offences'

Three Iranian men are thought to be facing the death penalty for having homosexual relations.

The men, named as Nemat Safavi, Mehdi P and Moshen G, have been on death row for three years and allegedly committed the crimes while under the age of 18...

A date has not been set for their executions, but according to Human Rights Watch, their lawyers believe it could happen any day.

Majid Zamani is an asset for Iran, a person with a successful record in some of the most prestigious universities in the world; a person who gave up career opportunities abroad in order to enter public service in the country he loves. International Christian Concern (ICC) has learned that on October 7 an Iranian judge charged Maryam and Marzieh with ‘crimes’ of apostasy and propagation of the Christian faith. They could face life imprisonment if convicted of apostasy.

An Iranian MP said today there is proof that some reformists were sexually abused in prison after the disputed presidential election in June.
"Raping of some detainees through baton and soda bottle has been proved to us," the unnamed member of the investigative committee was quoted as saying.
His comments are the first official acknowledgment that prisoners were violated. Until now, Iran's leaders had dismissed such opposition claims as mischief-making.

Three Americans arrested after apparently straying into Iran are being questioned by police, Iranian state television has reported.

"We don't know whether they are tourists or not. We are questioning them," said a local security official.

Iranian officials have accused the three of ignoring warnings from border guards and crossing over from Iraq's Kurdish region on Friday

They plan to join a gathering at the graveside of a young girl whose killing during protests on 20 June became a potent symbol of post-election unrest.

Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, warned today that continuing divisions would lead to the collapse of the country's ruling elite, after a former president called for a referendum on the government's legitimacy.
The referendum call from Mohammad Khatami appeared to be part of an opposition strategy to keep Khamenei and allied hardliners on the defensive over last month's disputed elections.
It coincided with a demand from Mir Hossein Mousavi, the leading opposition candidate in those elections, for the release of opposition supporters detained for protesting against the official results, which gave a landslide victory to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
