Missing Chinese dissident lawyer Gao Zhisheng 'alive'

Prominent Chinese human rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng, missing for more than a year after being detained by police, has spoken to Western journalists.
He said he was living near Wutai mountain, a Buddhist landmark in northern Shanxi province.
"I want to live a quiet life for a while," Mr Gao said by telephone.
He told Reuters news agency he had been released six months ago. He was abducted by police from a relative's house in February 2009.
Reuters said it had taken steps to verify Mr Gao's identity.
Another human rights lawyer said he had also spoken to Mr Gao on Sunday.

It should have been a brief trip. Last Wednesday, Natalia Estemirova, known to her friends as Natasha, left her flat in the Chechen capital, Grozny, and set off towards the bus stop. Usually, it took her 15-20 minutes to get to work – a bumpy ride in a shared No 55 mini-van, down an avenue of green tower blocks, past giant posters of Chechnya's warlord president Ramzan Kadyrov, and several of Russian prime minister Vladimir Putin.
On this occasion, she didn't make it. A hundred metres beyond the entrance of her 10th-floor flat – which overlooks a patch of grassy wasteland and a grove of shabby walnut trees – four gunmen were waiting.

That could be the prospect facing the new PSNI chief following the settlement of a huge lawsuit in the US taken by the family of a man who died after receiving multiple Taser shocks from the local constabulary in Missouri.

Torture left alleged '20th hijacker' Mohammed al-Qahtani with serious heart problems, says Susan Crawford.

A senior Bush administration official has admitted that a Guantánamo Bay detainee was tortured by the US military, leaving him in a "life-threatening condition".

Susan Crawford, the Pentagon official in charge of military tribunals at the camp, said Mohammed al-Qahtani, a Saudi suspected of involvement in the September 11 terrorist plot, was subject to sustained isolation, sleep deprivation, nudity and prolonged exposure to cold. She said the torture meant he could not be prosecuted.

China woman loses fight for home

A well-known Chinese activist has lost her six-year battle to save her traditional-style Beijing home from demolition.

Workers have torn down what remains of Ni Yulan's courtyard house, although she was not personally there to see it.

The former lawyer is in a detention centre awaiting trial on charges linked to the destruction of her home.

Her husband, Dong Jiqin, says the demolition was illegal, although it was approved by the local court.

On October 30, Christian Attorney Li Subin was told he was fired from the Beijing Yitong Law Firm because he and 35 other Beijing lawyers signed an open letter in August calling for direct election of the leaders of the Beijing Lawyers Association [equivalent to Bar Association].

The world has undeniably changed since the September 11 attacks triggered George W. Bush's declaration of a global war on terror. One of the biggest consequences, says jurist Arthur Chaskalson, has been a widespread decline in respect for basic human rights. Chaskalson, a former chief justice of South Africa, was part of the legal team that defended Nelson Mandela before the African National Congress leader's 1964 sentence to life imprisonment for trying to overthrow the white minority government. Chaskalson, 76, now leads the International Commission of Jurists, a human rights advocacy group consisting of lawyers and academics from 62 different countries.

Obama backs Northern Ireland truth process and Finucane inquiry

US Presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama has backed calls for a Northern Ireland truth process and for an independent public inquiry into the murder of lawyer Pat Finucane, according to lobby group the Irish-American Unity Conference.

Amnesty International has long called for such a public inquiry into the lawyer's killing, something which the UK government has so far resisted.

My friends and I are seriously committed to going out and we are not alone. This is a nation that loves a knees up. So why not encourage people to do something fun they already love doing? Parties are a great way to celebrate the human rights we have and raise money to help others who aren’t able to party (maybe they are on death row, displaced, under house arrest or locked up somewhere). Through Amnesty parties we can draw attention to these issues.

Taser stun guns have been described as torture weapons and a judge has been urged to ban them immediately.
Lawyers acting for an unnamed Belfast child have won the right to a judicial review of the Police Service of Northern Ireland using the weapons.
