Seamus Heaney wrote this dedication for Seeger’s nine-decade milestone:
"Pete Seeger's singing has fulfilled the high classical expectation that poetry be both sweet and helpful. His art managed to take the strain of his activism, the banjo in his hand was his hammer of justice, and his music was more than equal to the music of what happened."

I’ll put it more simply. Pete Seeger is a human rights hero. Happy Birthday.

Rwanda singer jailed for genocide

One of Rwanda's most famous singers, Simon Bikindi, has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for inciting violence during the 1994 genocide.

His conviction stems from a speech he made from a vehicle equipped with a public address system encouraging ethnic Hutus to kill Tutsis.

Prosecutors at the UN-backed tribunal based in Tanzania had called for the singer to be given a life sentence.

Some 800,000 Tutsis and moderate Hutus were slaughtered in just 100 days.

In its judgement, the International Criminal Tribunal for Rwanda (ICTR) said that several of Bikindi's songs, which were widely broadcast in Rwanda at the time, had incited hatred against Tutsis.

My friends and I are seriously committed to going out and we are not alone. This is a nation that loves a knees up. So why not encourage people to do something fun they already love doing? Parties are a great way to celebrate the human rights we have and raise money to help others who aren’t able to party (maybe they are on death row, displaced, under house arrest or locked up somewhere). Through Amnesty parties we can draw attention to these issues.

The director of the documentary is a Cuban-born New Yorker, Ela Troyano, who feels that the singer was "an amazing artist who has never been given her due because she was black and because her lyrics and her stance were very working class".
