Pakistan Rape Victim Faces New Injustice

Every day, Mukhtar Mai faces the trauma of what happened to her. Nine years ago, to punish her for an affair her brother was accused of having, a tribal council ordered that she be repeatedly raped. After the attack, she says she was paraded past scores of villagers. It became the most infamous women's rights case in Pakistan for years. Six suspected rapists were caught, convicted and imprisoned. Pakistan's Supreme Court has decided that all but one of the men previously imprisoned for gang-raping Mukhtar Mai on the orders of tribal elders should have their convictions overturned.

They have now been released.

Hafiz Mughees, 19, and Hafiz Muneeb, 15, were going to visit relatives in Buttar village when some people caught them and accused them of being robbers. In a brazen display of mob justice, they killed the brothers by beating them with sticks and iron rods in the presence of policemen. The mob then hung up the bodies of the two brothers in a square.

The US contractor Blackwater is operating in Pakistan at a secret CIA airfield used for launching drone attacks, according to a former US official, despite repeated government denials that the company is in the country.
The official, who had direct knowledge of the operation, said that employees with Blackwater, now renamed Xe Services, patrol the area round the Shamsi airbase in Baluchistan province.
He also confirmed that Blackwater employees help to load laser-guided Hellfire missiles on to CIA-operated drones that target al-Qaida members suspected of hiding in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border regions.......

In a dramatic intervention using the protection of parliamentary privilege, the former shadow home secretary revealed how MI5 and Greater Manchester police effectively sub-contracted the torture of Rangzieb Ahmed to a Pakistani intelligence agency, the Inter-Services Intelligence Directorate (ISI), whose routine use of torture has been widely documented.

'Dozens dead' in US drone strike

At least 45 people have died in a missile strike by a US drone aircraft in Pakistan, officials there have said.

The people killed in South Waziristan region had been attending a funeral for others killed in a US drone strike earlier on Tuesday.

A British resident detained at Guantanamo Bay for more than four years has arrived back in the UK.
Ethiopian-born Binyam Mohamed, 30, landed at RAF Northolt in London on Monday afternoon, accompanied by Metropolitan Police officers.
Mr Mohamed says he was tortured while in custody on suspicion of terrorism.
He said in a statement the worst moment of his captivity was when he realised his alleged torturers were receiving material from UK intelligence agents.

A US military lawyer is travelling to Britain to urge the Foreign Office to press harder for the release of a UK resident detained at Guantanamo Bay.
Lt Col Yvonne Bradley told the BBC that her client Binyam Mohamed is very ill as a result of a hunger strike.
Charges against him were dropped last year. He has alleged torture, and the UK government has been criticised after the full details were kept secret.
"Mr Mohamed needs to be released now and not later," said Lt Col Bradley.
