An MP has backed calls for the DNA screening of all men in Bristol as part of the hunt for the murderer of Jo Yeates...

Bristol East Labour MP Kerry McCarthy said if police thought the exercise was worthwhile she believed most men would understand why they were being asked...

Ms McCarthy said she believed the majority of people would be sympathetic to requests for DNA samples.

She added: "But rather than taking DNA just from men in the Clifton area, where the population is somewhat transient, the operation should be widened to include the whole of the city.

"Quite how the police would organise this I don't know," she added.

Online classified ad websites like Craigslist have become the largest marketers of children trafficked into the commercial sex industry. The steady stream of exploited children for sale on Craigslist has had anti-trafficking groups demanding change for years. In the past 12 months, a trafficking survivor whose pimp forced her to advertise for her own statutory rape on Craigslist at age 11 wrote an open letter to Craig Newmark asking him to remove the “adult services” section where she was sold. Cash-strapped nonprofits rejected donations from the Craigslist Foundation as tainted money. And 10,000 Change.org readers signed a petition asking Craigslist to stop profiting from child sex slavery.

It is my observation that the world is suffering from not living to its highest potential.

We still have racism sexism homophobia and all other forms of ignorance. That ignorance unfortunately permeates nearly every culture in the so-called “developed” countries.

Until we understand how this ignorance comes about then it is possible that we will not able to make a different choice about it.

I think I have one possible explanation of how this ignorance comes about and stays in our culture. It’s not the one and only right explanation, but it is something that I have thought about and I would like to offer it forward for you to think about.

It felt like a minor terror alert. Four security guards were watching me, whispering into microphones on their collars. A plainclothes police officer had just covered my camera lens, mentioned the words "hostile reconnaissance" and told me I would be followed around the city if I moved.
Two uniformed officers were on their way to stop and search me under section 44 of the Terrorism Act, he said. Special Branch, the police counter-terrorism unit linked to the secret services, had been informed.

HANOI, Vietnam — Followers of a world-famous Buddhist teacher say police and an angry mob have forced them out of a monastery in central Vietnam, ending a religious experiment in the communist country that turned into a monthslong standoff with authorities.

Followers of Thich Nhat Hanh, an Vietnam-born monk who has popularized Buddhism in the West, said about 150 monks were forced from the Bat Nha monastery in Lam Dong province Sunday, and about 230 nuns left on their own Monday morning.

Kenya sweeps away top-rank police

The government in Kenya has replaced almost all of the country's most senior police officers in what analysts say could be the start of major reform.
Human rights groups blame the police for much of the killing that took place during violence that followed elections in 2007.
The changes go to the top - ex-police commissioner Maj Gen Hussein Ali has been moved to the Post Office.
Human rights agencies have cautiously welcomed the changes.

Sometimes I am frightened that the police will do something to my family. They know it wasn't a kidnapping, but they will never admit their mistake. They are very bad people and might retaliate because I am daring to fight back. I know there are lots of people like me in prison. People don't understand that the police just pick you up and take you to prison, where nobody listens to you and nobody believes you.

The family of Ian Tomlinson, who collapsed after being hit by an officer at the G20 protests in London, have accused the police of engaging in a cover-up to stop them finding out the truth.
In an interview with the Guardian, Tomlinson's widow, Julia, and son, Paul King, spoke for the first time about the anger, hurt and frustration they have felt in the months since his death.
They said they felt they had been pressured by the City of London police, Scotland Yard and the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) not to speak out, but could no longer keep quiet because of their concerns.

Several Indian police commandos have been suspended after an extraordinary series of photographs were published apparently showing the killing of an unarmed man in the north-eastern city of Imphal.
Authorities in the state of Manipur have promised a judicial inquiry into what appears to be a "fake encounter" – a tactic used by Indian police to dispose of suspects who they do not believe will be dealt with by the courts. ...........
.....The pictures, published in the respected Tehelka news magazine, appear to show the sequence of events leading up to the shooting dead of a former militant, Chungkam Sanjit, and the aftermath of the encounter.

Chinese security forces put on a show of strength in the capital of Xinjiang province today as Hu Jintao, China's president, cut short his trip to Italy for the G8 summit to return home and deal with continuing ethnic violence.
Helicopters hovered, loudspeaker vans broadcast messages urging calm and hundreds of paramilitary officers marched around the city chanting. Hundreds more guarded the perimeter of the city's largely Uighur area, several with bayonets. .....Li Zhi, head of Urumqi's communist party, pledged to execute those responsible for the 156 deaths or more in vicious attacks on Sunday. More than 1,100 people were wounded and more than 1,400 have been arrested.

Film about de Menezes premieres in home town

The life story of the Brazilian man shot dead by police on a London Underground train because they believed he was a suicide bomber is celebrated in a film which premieres in his home town this evening.

The population of Gonzaga is expected to double in size as 10,000 people pack the town's football ground for the first screening of the film, entitled Jean Charles.

Jean Charles de Menezes was 27 years old when Metropolitan Police officers fired seven bullets into his head at Stockwell Tube station on 22 July 2005. The force was found guilty of endangering public safety in a subsequent inquiry into the incident but no individual officers have been held accountable for his death.

The secretly recorded memoirs of the Chinese Communist party leader who was pushed out for siding with the students during the 1989 crackdown in Tiananmen Square have been released four years after his death.
In tapes secretly recorded during his 16 years under house arrest, Zhao Ziyang, the former head of the Communist party, denounced the killing of protesters as a "tragedy", and challenged the party's subsequent rejection of democratic reforms.
The tapes were smuggled out of China and will be published in English and Chinese this month – as Prisoner of the State: The secret Journal of Zhao Ziyang – days before the 20th anniversary of the massacre.
