You might have missed the remarks made by an Egyptian general to CNN this week. He was talking about the army's treatment of a group of women who had formed part of a protest in Tahrir Square on 9 March.

The general, who apparently wanted to remain anonymous, is quoted as saying:

"The girls who were detained were not like your daughter or mine. These were girls who had camped out in tents with male protestors in Tahrir Square, and we found in the tents Molotov cocktails and drugs. We didn't want them to say we had sexually assaulted or raped them, so we wanted to prove that they weren't virgins in the first place. None of them were."

Pakistan Rape Victim Faces New Injustice

Every day, Mukhtar Mai faces the trauma of what happened to her. Nine years ago, to punish her for an affair her brother was accused of having, a tribal council ordered that she be repeatedly raped. After the attack, she says she was paraded past scores of villagers. It became the most infamous women's rights case in Pakistan for years. Six suspected rapists were caught, convicted and imprisoned. Pakistan's Supreme Court has decided that all but one of the men previously imprisoned for gang-raping Mukhtar Mai on the orders of tribal elders should have their convictions overturned.

They have now been released.

Politically motivated sexual violence directed against women is an issue that is seldom the subject of widespread media coverage yet it profoundly affects millions of women in communities worldwide. Organized rape is a tactic used to denigrate and repress political prisoners and victims of war and it is often under reported due to the stigma attached to being a victim of this crime in many parts of the world. Rather than existing as a side effect of war, in countries such as Darfur, Pakistan, Peru, Serbia and Rwanda mass rape has been systematically used as a tool for ethnic cleansing, to spread HIV, extract information and to terrorize rival tribes, movements and dissidents.

The economic disparities between the rich and poor of Indonesia are starker than they ever have been in the history of the nation. The changes which have swept the more privileged areas are nowhere to be seen in the poorest areas of Java which house over 20 million people who manage to survive with inadequate sanitation, food supplies and health care. The true cost of lack of progress in this area is reflected in the maternal mortality ratio of 307 per 100,000 women which is amongst the highest in Southeast Asia, equating to the death of 1 in 65 mothers who give birth.

When Chouchou Namegabe launched a radio talk show to air the testimonies of rape survivors, she knew it would provoke outrage across Congo. And sure enough, as soon as the first interview aired, she was overwhelmed by criticism. People would yell at her on the street: “How dare you talk about sex on the airwaves?”

After all, this was a culture that didn’t even have a word for rape and had to borrow one—ubakaji—from neighboring Tanzania.

Why 1984 Still Matters

Many raise the slogan ‘never forget’, others less comfortable with the memories say ‘move on’. But I would say that there is a third way here. It is one which says ‘never again’, and calls for India to clean up its human rights record and become a proper functioning democracy. That is something that can only be done once justice is served on the accused in the 1984 genocide in Delhi. Then the claim by some that Sikhs cannot ever be safe or receive justice within India has less basis and the potential for further conflict dissipates. We can only hope that closure and justice for the survivors and the community as a whole is at long, long last, not far away.
