The negligence of the Italian authorities has turned the island of Lampedusa into the site of a humanitarian crisis.

In the last few weeks and months, thousands of Tunisians, mainly young men, have found themselves stranded on this tiny island after leaving poverty-stricken Tunisia since the onset of the political unrest there.

European Union (EU) countries should end the forcible return of Roma and other minorities to Kosovo, Amnesty International said in a report published today (28 September).

“No welcome anywhere: Stop the forcible return of Roma to Kosovo”, details how Roma and members of other minority communities, including children, are forcibly returned to Kosovo, often in the early hours of the morning with nothing but the clothes they are wearing, to face the possibility of continuing discrimination and violence.

The Sudanese government and the most powerful rebel group in Darfur have signed a ceasefire intended to lead to a formal peace deal.
The president, Omar al-Bashir, and Khalil Ibrahim, leader of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), embraced one another after the signing ceremony in Qatar last night, which followed a year of internationally brokered negotiations.
Bashir described the move as a "major step towards ending the war" that began in 2003 and has caused 300,000 deaths, according to the UN.
The absence of other rebel groups from the deal means a wider peace agreement is still not in sight.

We, associations engaged daily with migrants, are convinced that the government plan to destroy jungles is ineffective and exacerbates the situation. Smashing the shelters causes the scattering of camps, delivering migrants into the hands of criminal networks and does not settle anything at all . It is persisting in the error of 2002 (the closure of the Sangatte camp).

Lying off the southern tip of India, the tropical island of Sri Lanka has beguiled travellers for centuries with its palm-fringed beaches, diverse landscapes and historical monuments.

But the island has been scarred by a long and bitter civil war arising out of ethnic tensions between the majority Sinhalese and the Tamil minority in the northeast.

After more than 25 years of violence, the conflict appeared to be at an end - at least militarily - in May 2009, when government forces eliminated the last area controlled by Tamil Tiger rebels.

Asylum-seekers need urgent help to escape destitution in Britain

As the UK Borders Agency announced plans to transfer up to 400 Nigerians to prisons in their home country the other day, we were treated to BNP proposals to "sink" boatloads of migrants.

As approaches to the asylum issue, these are a million miles apart but enough to remind us of the failure of any political group to develop a workable solution to asylum which deals effectively and sympathetically with the people and families caught inside the system.
