Libyan NTC pledges to investigate rights violations | Amnesty International

Libya’s National Transitional Council has pledged to investigate human rights abuses committed by its own supporters, in response to a newly released report by Amnesty International.

In a statement on 13 September, the NTC condemned all abuses committed during the war, and said it “will move quickly to act on Amnesty’s findings to make sure similar abuses are avoided in areas of continued conflict such as Bani Walid and Sirte.”

Hanan Mohamed had sustained multiple shrapnel injuries to both legs, as well as her right arm. She was relatively lucky; three of her relatives were killed when her home in the Garara area was hit by several projectiles which she believes to be Grad rockets, on 28 March. Hanan told Amnesty International that she had just finished her afternoon prayer, when she heard an explosion.

An Israeli army officer who fired the entire magazine of his automatic rifle into a 13-year-old Palestinian girl and then said he would have done the same even if she had been three years old was acquitted on all charges by a military court yesterday.

The soldier, who has only been identified as "Captain R", was charged with relatively minor offences for the killing of Iman al-Hams who was shot 17 times as she ventured near an Israeli army post near Rafah refugee camp in Gaza a year ago.

The manner of Iman's killing, and the revelation of a tape recording in which the captain is warned that she was just a child who was "scared to death",

Craig, square-jawed and of Irish American stock from Boston, looked like a young Kennedy stranded in Afghanistan. Night had fallen over the shattered compound in Now Zad where we were bedding down.
The company that Craig and I were attached to, Lima, had spent its day blasting its way through an area of abandoned farms believed to be host to dozens of Taliban.

The US contractor Blackwater is operating in Pakistan at a secret CIA airfield used for launching drone attacks, according to a former US official, despite repeated government denials that the company is in the country.
The official, who had direct knowledge of the operation, said that employees with Blackwater, now renamed Xe Services, patrol the area round the Shamsi airbase in Baluchistan province.
He also confirmed that Blackwater employees help to load laser-guided Hellfire missiles on to CIA-operated drones that target al-Qaida members suspected of hiding in the Afghanistan-Pakistan border regions.......

Decades of pollution in the Niger Delta has led to serious human rights violations, driving the people of the region into poverty. The oil industry has failed to adequately prevent the human rights impacts of its operations in the Niger Delta.

I do not understand the joy that we live in XXI century, since people continue to die of starvation, murder in wars and conflicts, kill the animals. We have modern gadgets, but it's only scenery. Civilization is not developed at all. Politics is for me secondary to the fundamental humanitarian issues. I am not proud of our world, so I can not be proud of ....?, because it is the same.

A group of fundamentalists organized by the Iranian embassy were demonstrating against Israel when other exiled Iranians showed their hatred of the Iranian regime at Sergel Square on Sunday. Iranian ambassador. Rasoul Eslami, were among the demonstrators.
Participants from two different demonstrations at Sergel Square clashed, forcing police to block the part of central Stockholm.

Israeli soldiers who served in the Gaza Strip during the offensive of December and January have spoken out about being ordered to shoot without hesitation, destroying houses and mosques with a general disregard for Palestinian lives.
In testimony that will fuel international and Arab demands for war crime investigations, 30 combat soldiers report that the army's priority was to minimise its own casualties to maintain Israeli public support for the three-week Operation Cast Lead.
One specific allegation is that Palestinians were used by the army as "human shields" despite a 2005 Israeli high court ruling outlawing the practice.

George Bush is not a man who does irony. It's not in his personal vocabulary. Take the exquisite irony behind the story of Saddam Hussein's gun.
The weapon, a 9mm Glock 18C, was discovered by Delta Force special troops when they dug Hussein out of his fox hole outside Tikrit on 13 December 2003. The legendary beast of Baghdad emerged from the 8ft-deep hole bewildered and disorientated; with his shaggy beard and unkempt mop of hair he looked closer to a dishevelled elf than one of the world's great dictators.
The Iraq war at that point was still in its infancy, Bush was feeling buoyant. In his eyes the pistol represented a fundamental triumph of good over evil.

Israel was last night confronting a major challenge over the conduct of its 22-day military offensive in Gaza after testimonies by its own soldiers revealed that troops were allowed and, in some cases, even ordered to shoot unarmed Palestinian civilians.
The testimonies – the first of their kind to emerge from inside the military – are at marked variance with official claims that the military made strenuous efforts to avoid civilian casualties and tend to corroborate Palestinian accusations that troops used indiscriminate and disproportionate firepower in civilian areas during the operation.

A Rwandan expeditionary force has crossed into the Democratic Republic of the Congo to hunt down Hutu rebels in a dangerous attempt to end a long-running jungle war.

The 1,500-2,000 Rwandan troops crossed the border at the invitation of the Congolese government, determined to uproot Hutu guerrillas whose violent attacks on Tutsis sparked a new round of fighting last year.

Government near to collapse, says Somalia leader

President Abdullahi Yusuf of Somalia has admitted that his government is on the verge of collapse and that Islamist groups now control most of the country.

In a speech to Somali MPs gathered in the Kenyan capital Nairobi at the weekend, Yusuf said that the government only had a presence in the capital Mogadishu and in Baidoa, "and people are being killed there every day. Islamists have taken over everywhere else."

As Germany marks the 70th anniversary of the Kristallnacht anti-Semitic riots, Chancellor Angela Merkel said all Germans must act against racism.
At a ceremony at Berlin's largest synagogue, she said Germans "cannot be silent" in the face of anti-Semitism.
Kristallnacht, or the Night of Broken Glass, is often regarded as the starting point of the Holocaust.
