Could Sudan soon carry the scent of jasmine?

So as the Tunisian scent of jasmine wafts its way across Egypt and Yemen, speculation is growing as to whether this pungent aroma could be heading south.

Many – including Amnesty – have speculated that the recent uprisings across northern Sudan are in direct correlation to its northern neighbour’s unrest, although an official from Sudan’s ruling party has attempted to dismiss any such hint of a presidential overthrow.

The Sudanese government and the most powerful rebel group in Darfur have signed a ceasefire intended to lead to a formal peace deal.
The president, Omar al-Bashir, and Khalil Ibrahim, leader of the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM), embraced one another after the signing ceremony in Qatar last night, which followed a year of internationally brokered negotiations.
Bashir described the move as a "major step towards ending the war" that began in 2003 and has caused 300,000 deaths, according to the UN.
The absence of other rebel groups from the deal means a wider peace agreement is still not in sight.

The Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies released its second annual report on the state of human rights in the Arab world for the year 2009. The report, entitled Bastion of Impunity, Mirage of Reform, concludes that the human rights situation in the Arab region has deteriorated throughout the region over the last year.

A Sudanese woman has been jailed for a month after refusing to pay a fine for "dressing indecently" by wearing trousers, her lawyers say.
Lubna Ahmed Hussein did not want to "give the verdict any legitimacy" by paying the fine of about $200 (£122), her lawyer, Nabil Adib, told the BBC. .....
......."She thinks she was unfairly tried and convicted and was not given a proper chance to put her defence case," Mr Adib said.
He said Ms Hussein would appeal to both the Court of Appeal and the Constitutional Court.

Sitting in the restaurant where her ordeal began, Lubna Hussein looks at the offending item of clothing that caused all the trouble and laughs softly. "In Sudan, women who wear trousers must be flogged!" she says, her eyes widening at the thought. The former journalist faces up to 40 lashes and an unlimited fine if she is convicted of breaching Article 152 of Sudanese criminal law, which prohibits dressing indecently in public.

Police today beat supporters of a Sudanese woman facing 40 lashes for wearing trousers as her case continued.
Riot police armed with batons moved in and detained dozens of people who had gathered near the Khartoum courthouse before Lubna Hussein's case was heard.
Hussein, a former reporter who was working for the UN at the time of her arrest, was detained in July at a party and accused of breaching indecency laws.
Her case is being seen as a test of Sudan's Islamic decency regulations, which many women activists say are vague and give individual police officers undue latitude to determine what is acceptable clothing.

A Sudanese woman who is due to appear in court in Khartoum says she faces up to 40 lashes for wearing trousers.
The woman, Lubna Hussein - a former journalist who now works for the United Nations - has invited journalists and observers to the trial.
She was arrested in a restaurant in the capital with other women earlier this month for wearing "indecent" clothing.

Sudan women 'lashed for trousers'

Several Sudanese women have been flogged as a punishment for dressing "indecently", according to a local journalist who was arrested with them.
Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein, who says she is facing 40 lashes, said she and 12 other women wearing trousers were arrested in a restaurant in the capital, Khartoum.
She told the BBC several of the women had pleaded guilty to the charges and had 10 lashes immediately.
Khartoum, unlike South Sudan, is governed by Sharia law.

Hanged Sudanese 'may be innocent'

Lobby group Amnesty International has condemned as "outrageous" the hanging of nine Sudanese men convicted of beheading a newspaper editor in 2006.
"They were arbitrarily arrested, tortured and then subjected to an unfair trial," said the body's deputy Africa director Tawanda Hondora.
They were hanged in a prison in the capital, Khartoum, in front of relatives of the editor, Mohammed Taha.
The men, from Darfur, were apparently upset by an article in Mr Taha's paper....Mr Taha's al-Wifaq newspaper had angered members of the Darfur community by downplaying the scale of rape in the Darfur conflict and insulting women from the region.

Sudan's security forces violated international law in an attack on a Darfur refugee camp in August, a United Nations and African Union report said on Friday.

The U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights and U.N.-African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur (UNAMID) said the government troops acted unlawfully when they opened fire on a crowd in Kalma displacement camp, killing 33 people.

If it's not refugees, it's hunger and disease. If it's not pirates, it's insurgents. If it's not misgovernance, it's a lack of governance of any kind.
