Two prominent Chinese lawyers who offered to represent Tibetans face the loss of their professional licenses as part of a recent drive to threaten lawyers and law firms, Human Rights Watch said today. The government’s unprecedented efforts to intimidate firms into refusing politically sensitive cases reflects the vulnerability of the legal profession, and overshadows the June 1, 2008, enactment of revisions to the Law on Lawyers, which is supposed to establish new procedural protections for lawyers.

Is it possible to be 'neutral' over the issue of Tibet? Probably not, but if for sake of argument, it were possible then a 'neutral' person might wonder why it is this issue which causes so much friction between China and the outside world.

South Africa has denied the Dalai Lama a visa to attend a peace conference linked to the 2010 Football World Cup, which the country is hosting.
Archbishop Desmond Tutu has pulled out of the meeting in protest and branded the decision "disgraceful".
A government spokesman has denied suggestions that the ban was a result of Chinese pressure.

Enraged nomads stormed through this windswept town on the Tibetan plateau a year ago this month, raiding a police compound, setting fire to squad cars and forcing police officers to flee. To the north, Tibetans on horseback galloped into a schoolyard, ripped down a Chinese flag and hoisted a Tibetan one, shouting "Free Tibet!"

Chinese-backed Tibetan leaders will soon set a date for what they call "Serf Liberation Day" to mark the defeat 50 years ago of a pro-independence uprising in the Himalayan region, state media reported Sunday.

But even a living god will die, and though healthy, the Dalai Lama is now in his 70s. When he passes, it will be more than a decade before his reincarnation, found as a boy, is old enough to make an impact on the world stage. By then, there may be nothing Tibetan left in Lhasa at all.

2009 will be the 50th anniversary of the uprising, exiled Tibetan groups and their supporters - such as International Campaign for Tibet, Tibetan Youth Activist, Tibetan Uprising Organization, Students for a Free Tibet and Friends of Tibet - are planning even grander commemorations including more massive street demonstrations. Some believe the protests will be more impressive than those preceding the Beijing Olympics.

A senior Chinese official has welcomed the UK's decision to recognise Beijing's direct rule over Tibet.
Zhu Weiqun, who is leading talks with Tibetan exiles, told the BBC the move had brought the UK "in line with the universal position in today's world". But Mr Zhu would not say whether it might be linked with Prime Minister Gordon Brown's efforts to bring China into a new world economic order.
Beijing says Tibet has been part of the Chinese nation since the 13th Century. Many Tibetans disagree, pointing out that the Himalayan region was an independent kingdom for many centuries, and that Chinese rule over Tibet has not been constant.
