BBC News - UK rendition and torture collusion inquiry scrapped

A controversial inquiry into allegations of wrongdoing by the UK's security services is being scrapped.

Justice Secretary Ken Clarke said the inquiry into the treatment of detainees could not continue because of Metropolitan Police investigations.

These follow fresh allegations that officials assisted the rendition of men to Libya, where they were tortured.

Home Secretary Theresa May told the Sunday Telegraph that she would "like to see the Human Rights Act go" to be replaced with a “British Bill of Rights” something we have heard rumbles of for some time. What a shame that Theresa May has jumped on the band wagon, of political posturing designed to play to the gallery of public opinion. Opinion born of misinformation, scandal and scare mongering.

TPIMs, “Terrorism Prevention and Investigation Measures”, are the Home Office’s latest way of dealing with people it deems suspected terrorists in Britain. It’s the third supposed “solution” to the “problem” of what to do with people it believes are a threat but says it can’t deport or put on trial.

Full video of the event is provided below. Victoria Brittain introduced the book and commented on some of the glowing reviews it has received (see box below). Omar Barghouti read out a personal message of solidarity for the peoples of the Arab world who are rising up to break the shackles of neo-colonialism.

Huge numbers of Britons would support an anti-immigration English nationalist party if it was not associated with violence and fascist imagery, according to the largest survey into identity and extremism conducted in the UK.

A Populus poll found that 48% of the population would consider supporting a new anti-immigration party committed to challenging Islamist extremism, and would support policies to make it statutory for all public buildings to fly the flag of St George or the union flag....

Jo Yeates murder case: MP backs DNA testing

An MP has backed calls for the DNA screening of all men in Bristol as part of the hunt for the murderer of Jo Yeates...

Bristol East Labour MP Kerry McCarthy said if police thought the exercise was worthwhile she believed most men would understand why they were being asked...

Ms McCarthy said she believed the majority of people would be sympathetic to requests for DNA samples.

She added: "But rather than taking DNA just from men in the Clifton area, where the population is somewhat transient, the operation should be widened to include the whole of the city.

"Quite how the police would organise this I don't know," she added.

A key Conservative has been recorded suggesting people who run bed and breakfasts in their homes should have the right to reject homosexual guests.
But shadow home secretary Chris Grayling said hotels should not be allowed to discriminate in that way.
Labour and the Lib Dems said the Tories would allow discrimination "to thrive".

Criticism of MI5 that was removed from the ruling on the involvement of the security service in the torture of Binyam Mohamed must be restored to the judgment, the court of appeal ruled today.
The decision is another blow to the government after it lost its attempt earlier this month to cover up MI5's complicity in "cruel, inhuman, and degrading treatment" meted out to the British resident Mohamed by the US.
Passages that appeared in the original draft judgment were removed after Jonathan Sumption QC, the government's counsel, claimed the words suggested that MI5's approach undermined assurances given by ministers and that MI5 had "an interest in suppressing information".

Reports of racial and religiously motivated crime rose following the election of British National party councillors in several far- right strongholds, police statistics have revealed.
Complaints of hate crime increased in wards in the West Midlands, London and Essex after the election of a BNP member, in spite of declines in reported hate crime in the wider police areas. In other wards race crime reportedly rose in the runup to BNP election victories, according to the figures, obtained by the Guardian under the Freedom of Information Act.
