Ayat al-Gormezi, 20, a poet and student arrested two months ago after reading out a poem at a pro-democracy rally, is due to go on trial today before a military tribunal, her mother said. Ayat was forced to turn herself in when masked policemen threatened to kill her brothers unless she did so.

Pakistan Rape Victim Faces New Injustice

Every day, Mukhtar Mai faces the trauma of what happened to her. Nine years ago, to punish her for an affair her brother was accused of having, a tribal council ordered that she be repeatedly raped. After the attack, she says she was paraded past scores of villagers. It became the most infamous women's rights case in Pakistan for years. Six suspected rapists were caught, convicted and imprisoned. Pakistan's Supreme Court has decided that all but one of the men previously imprisoned for gang-raping Mukhtar Mai on the orders of tribal elders should have their convictions overturned.

They have now been released.

Many raise the slogan ‘never forget’, others less comfortable with the memories say ‘move on’. But I would say that there is a third way here. It is one which says ‘never again’, and calls for India to clean up its human rights record and become a proper functioning democracy. That is something that can only be done once justice is served on the accused in the 1984 genocide in Delhi. Then the claim by some that Sikhs cannot ever be safe or receive justice within India has less basis and the potential for further conflict dissipates. We can only hope that closure and justice for the survivors and the community as a whole is at long, long last, not far away.

As most of you would be aware by now, Amnesty International UK is running a campaign of solidarity in support of the women's rights defenders in Iran. By showing our support we are hoping to help them maintain their strength and bravery as they stand up against discriminatory laws enforced by a suppressive and violent government.

By showing such strong support for these women we are also ensuring that the Iranian government know that we are watching in the anticipation that this will make them more accountable and provide some protection to these women.

Row over Afghan wife-starving law

Afghan legislation allowing a husband to starve his wife if she refuses to have sex has been published in the official gazette and become law.
The original bill caused outrage earlier this year, forcing Afghan President Hamid Karzai to withdraw it.
But critics say the amended version of the law remains highly repressive.
They accuse Mr Karzai of selling out Afghan women for the sake of conservative Shia support at next week's presidential election.

Sudan women 'lashed for trousers'

Several Sudanese women have been flogged as a punishment for dressing "indecently", according to a local journalist who was arrested with them.
Lubna Ahmed al-Hussein, who says she is facing 40 lashes, said she and 12 other women wearing trousers were arrested in a restaurant in the capital, Khartoum.
She told the BBC several of the women had pleaded guilty to the charges and had 10 lashes immediately.
Khartoum, unlike South Sudan, is governed by Sharia law.

Insurance companies in Iran will have to pay the same compensation for women and men in the case of death or injury, the Iranian government has said.
Previously, insurance policies have paid women or their families half of what a man or his relatives receive.

In a significant setback for the women’s movement in Iran, the Press Supervisory Board of Iran backed by the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance, revoked the license of Zanan, the country’s most prominent and important women’s magazine.

Zanan, which means “women” in Persian, is a monthly magazine dedicated to the reporting and analysis of women’s issues, problems, and achievements.

After 16 years of publication, Zanan's founder Shahla Sherkat has been accused of "offering a dark picture of the Islamic Republic through the pages of Zanan" and of "compromising the psyche and the mental health" of its readers by providing them with "morally questionable information."

Dr. Ebadi, a defender of women’s rights, has had her human rights organization forcibly closed by the Iranian authorities. In the latest of a series of serious incidents, an angry mob surrounded Dr. Ebadi’s home and personal office chanting death threats against her and violently vandalizing her building. Last week, authorities raided Dr. Ebadi’s personal office and seized her writings, confidential legal files, and two computers amid claims of so-called tax evasion.

Amnesty Students Send Video Message of Support for Campaign

Change for Equality: Student members of Amnesty International have produced a beautiful video in support of the One Million Signature Campaign.

In this video female and male students from different parts of the world and attending different universities attending the conference came together in a march holding banners read: "when injustice become law, struggle become our responsibility;" "One Woman=One Man." The determination with which these students have come together in their symbolic solidarity and support of equal rights defenders in the One Million Signatures Campaign and the beautiful Kurdish song accompanying the video is moving indeed.

Turkey 'fails to protect women'

Amnesty International has severely criticised the Turkish government and judiciary for their failure to act over violence against women.
The human rights group's latest report claims up to a half of all women in Turkey have been victims of violence.
Amnesty says changes have been made to the legal system but shocking failures to uphold the law continue.
Turkey is waiting for the European Union to decide to set a date for talks about its possible entry into the EU.
There has been no direct response so far from the Turkish government about the report.
