In his long years in opposition as leader of the Movement for Democratic Change, Morgan Tsvangirai was abused, hounded, arrested and sometimes beaten by officials and security forces acting on orders from the president, Robert Mugabe. As Zimbabwe's prime minister in a power-sharing government, Tsvangirai now finds himself obliged to deal face to face with the man who persecuted him so unceasingly. It has been a "dramatic" experience, he says.

Joyce Mujuru, Zimbabwe’s Vice-President, has been accused of being the mastermind behind a multimillion-dollar gold deal in defiance of international sanctions.

Mrs Mujuru tried to sell Congolese gold to a bullion dealer with offices in London.

Juliana Tafirei will probably die, while the pills that could save her life lie on her bedside table. The drugs arrive each month with a batch of Red Cross food aid at her small conical house in the village of Muzondo in Masvingo, a sprawling agricultural province of about 1.3 million people, 300km from Harare, the Zimbabwean capital. But there are a lot of mouths to feed and the food runs out after a couple of weeks, three at best. After that, Tafirei and her six children eat only every other day, a meal consisting of a few boiled wild vegetables and sometimes a cup of maize begged from neighbours.

Since February 2003, members of women's rights organisation Women of Zimbabwe Arise (WOZA) have been repeatedly arrested while taking part in peaceful demonstrations against the worsening social, economic and human rights situation in Zimbabwe. They have often been denied access to food, lawyers and medical care while in detention.
In May 2008, 14 members were arrested at a peaceful protest. They were calling for an end to the violence that erupted in Zimbabwe after the elections on 29 March. Two of those arrested were leaders of the organisation and were held in prison without bail for six weeks.
Despite the adversity, WOZA members continue to show great resilience and bravery.

1.The new government should immediately and unconditionally release Prisoners of Conscience. It should also either promptly charge all known and unknown political detainees with recognizable crimes, and ensure prompt and fair trial for them, or release them immediately.2.The new government should commit itself to opening up the operational environment for all NGOs and human rights groups, political parties and independent media.3.The new government should publicly acknowledge all human rights violations by the previous government, commit to establishing the truth, and take effective measures to guarantee non-repetition.

Zimbabwe's opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai is to be sworn in as prime minister in a unity government with President Robert Mugabe.
Mr Tsvangirai won the first round of last year's presidential election - but he withdrew from the run-off citing violence against his supporters.
However he later agreed to share power with Mr Mugabe.

Zimbabweans will be allowed to conduct business in other currencies, alongside the Zimbabwe dollar, in an effort to stem the country's runaway inflation.
.......... A Z$100 trillion note was recently introduced.

The country is also facing an deepening humanitarian crisis as well. A cholera outbreak has killed over 3,000 people according to the World Health Organization (WHO). And the World Food Programme (WFP) has revised up the number of people it says need food aid.

Prominent Zimbabwean human rights activist Jestina Mukoko, missing for the past three weeks, has appeared in court in the capital, Harare.

The state-run Herald newspaper says Ms Mukoko is charged with attempting to recruit people for military training to try to overthrow the government.

Robert Mugabe lives in a huge, new, Chinese-built mansion in Borrowdale Brooke Road, northern Harare, next to a white-owned farm that was seized, plundered and abandoned some years back.

Armed soldiers patrol the high-walled estate. Occupants of homes overlooking it were evicted when the President moved in.

Except when he leaves by helicopter, a bomb-proof Mercedes whisks Mr Mugabe out of the pagoda-style front gates, flanked by ornamental lions, for the 20-minute drive along one of the few well-maintained roads left in the capital to his office in an old colonial building in Samora Machel Avenue.
