At the beginning of the year we challenged President Obama to create a brighter future for human rights. He made a good start by taking steps to close Guantánamo, ban torture and expose past abuses.

We now need a full and independent inquiry into torture, both in the US and here in the UK. Email your MP now.

Terrorism is not a new phenomenon but the 'war on terror' is.

While Amnesty acknowledges the right of governments to protect their citizens when they face complex challenges and threats, these measures should never result in the compromise of human rights.

President Obama has ordered the suspension of military trials and the closure of Guantánamo Bay.

These are positive moves and a testament to everyone who has been tirelessly campaigning on these issues for so long. However there is more that needs to be done and we should now call on our own government to full and independently investigate their involvement in abuses.
